A former minister of health says there are simply too many obese people in this country. Dr Fuad Khan told News Power Now that the situation is getting out of hand. On Wednesday the Joint Select Committee for foreign affairs expressed concern with obesity, particularly in children.
Speaking to media on Thursday Dr Khan said the emerging US culture of fat acceptance and no fat shaming is going to negatively impact on this country.
“People are going to say ‘if you can do it in the US, then we can do it here’, when you have that type of approach, you put a damper on the war against obesity. People will think it’s ok to be obese. But it brings with it a number of serious complications.”
“Women in this country are getting too fat, at one time we had very nice women in Carnival, now nobody wants to look at our Carnival again because it’s only obese women walking all over the place.”
He said the matter has to be dealt with as a matter of urgency and this is why he has tabled a motion to debate obesity in the parliament.
“I tried to bring it back on the front burner..I hoped to achieve a plan of action as to how to implement a system to go forward. Both sides can get together for once and deal with the problem,” he said.
Dr Khan said when he was health minister he did a lot to educate people on proper eating habits.
